Emoticons by definition are used in a digital message or text to convey the writer's emotions or clarify intent. Sure, we all use them. In this case they surround the theme of Mic Hand Recordings newest release, and first of the new year, Emoticon, by imperfekt & Ryan Nixon. "they don’t care that it’s killing me inside/ they get off on my pain, I’m just happy that they came” -Hostage, track 4 …and the Emoticon EP was born. The collaboration of Ryan Nixon’s rhyme structures over tailor made imperfekt beat production has birthed a new “emotional” essence Hip Hop duo. It seems the tracks are old souls and the words are a welcomed breath of fresh air. Nixon, as Mic Hand’s newest roster spot, weaves through these tracks as if he’s studied them for years. With superior life analogies and wordplay in abundance; Nixon lures the listener with his true feelings through recorded raps. imperfekt laces 7 amazing new beats that have a soothing, meditative-state feel, sprinkled with a sense of urgency. The duo captures the aforementioned excellently on Tightrope, Emoticon’s second track. With an impcredible trance-like head-nodding beat, Nixon smoothly recites: ”this is that tightrope/ grippin on my soul/ I know where I've been/ probably be where I’ll go/ I don’t know whats next/ hopefully everything that I've been dreaming of”. The standout collaborative effort here is top notch and undeniable, creating an amazing project. If you find yourself with a tear or two in your eye while absorbing this down to earth effort, it is okay. Nixon and imperfekt have achieved their mission…Playing with your “emoti(c)ons”.
